I’ve had a few days at Thornfield,
and it is a vast improvement over Lowood. The little girl I’m teaching is
called Adele. She’s a sweetheart. Not exactly brilliant, but she has a good
temper and picks things up fast enough. The biggest blessing is Mrs. Fairfax.
She’s the housekeeper. The first day, I thought she was the mistress of the
house. Now that I know, it makes me
feel much more comfortable. We are equals, she and I, and I feel that I can be
at peace with myself. The real master of the house apparently rarely visits
Thornfield, so who knows when I’ll actually meet my employer. But I’m not
bothered. It’s lovely the way it is.
